The Twin Cities’ love of tacos was never more evident than during Taco Tour 2023. This past October 21, hungry throngs descended on Lake Street in Minneapolis to sample the 24 participating businesses’ takes on the tortilla-ensconced classic. In addition to tasty treats, attendees were treated to a taste of Latino culture. The sweet sounds of Son de Morelos Mariachi Band and the rock group Vhaltta punctuated the autumn air, Ballet Folklorico Mexico Azteca shared traditional dances, and those with post-taco fitness ambitions had live Zumba classes.
In the interest of culture (and tacos)
The goal of Latino Economic Development Center’s (LEDC) annual Taco Tour is to feature Latino-owned businesses and showcase the wide range of culinary offerings and traditions. “Taco Tour is so much fun,” said Rico Durán, the director of business development at LEDC. “It’s a way to celebrate one of Minnesota’s treasured and thriving multicultural communities, enriched with Latino food and culture. Plus, everyone loves tacos!”
And the People’s Choice Taco Award goes to …
The people have spoken and La Cochinita took home the People’s Choice Taco Award. The food truck brings the flavors of southern Mexico to the streets of the Twin Cities with lovingly handmade delicacies. But you can’t go wrong with any of the restaurants along Lake Street – there are only winners, even if you undertake your own private taco tour.
Below, Fox 9 offers a nice glimpse of both what La Cochinita offers and what Taco Tour is all about.
Kare 11, KSTP, and WCCO also featured Taco Tour 2023 on their news programs.
And while learning about Taco Tour on television is nice, there’s nothing like being there in person.
If you missed Taco Tour 2023, don’t worry: LEDC is holding its 25th Anniversary Taco Tour in September 2024. Stay tuned for updates!
We can’t do it alone
None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. The City of Minneapolis’s Great Streets Neighborhood Business District Program was instrumental in coordinating the complex logistics of such a big event, and our longtime partners Minneapolis Foundation, US Bank, Xcel Energy and Old National Bank continue to support Latino-owned businesses.
We’d also like to thank the Lake Street Council, Graves Foundation and PNC Bank, the latter of which we are thrilled to have as a new partner. Together we can build great things.
And we’ll see you at Taco Tour 2024!
