Growing up in a diverse neighborhood in Chicago, Ivan’s appreciation for small businesses made him realize he wanted to pursue a career in marketing. Small businesses like bakeries, corner stores, hair salons, and many others all played a role in shaping his youth and future aspirations. Ivan recognized the role local and ethnic entrepreneurs had in creating a vibrant and culturally enriching neighborhood. Because of this, moving to another state for college in a rural town came with challenges. The cultural vibrance of his neighborhood, Albany Park, was lost in the miles of farmland that surrounded his school. Despite this, he knew his career goals were in line with giving back to the same communities that formed his appreciation for not only his culture, but many others that made up Albany Park. During his time in St. Olaf, he learned the importance of storytelling and language to convey ideas in a professional setting; graduating with a degree in English and a minor in Management Studies.
Ivan had his eyes set on marketing since high school and had the opportunity to intern at different small businesses in his college town. His main goal was to use his background to shine a light on what makes a small business critical to the local economy. These internships helped Ivan gain professional, local experience that built expertise on the different methods of marketing. From market research and communications with a tourism software company to social media management and market position with a local skateboard brand, Ivan has gathered necessary foundations to successfully market small businesses. Ivan joined LEDC in March 2025, and aims to continue his passion for giving back to the Latino community and empowering businesses with the tools they need to embrace their heritage and entrepreneurship.
